McCain withdraws support for the Dietary Supplement Safety Act

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has rescinded his support for the Dietary Supplement Safety Act, which would have granted the FDA more power over retailers and suppliers in the industry. According to the American Herbal Products Association, in a March 4 letter to Senator John McCain (R-AZ) released last Friday, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) noted that Senator McCain intends to withdraw his support for certain elements of S. 3002, "The Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010," introduced in February by McCain and Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND).

Given that McCain has rescinded his support for S.3002 and co-sponsor Dorgan has already announced that he is not running for reelection in November, this bill is already dead in the water.

I am thrilled to hear this news. It was a horrible piece of legislation. About 5 years ago McCain and Hillary Clinton tacked on a rider to CAFTA which would have abolished Codex Alimentarious. It wanted to make it illegal for retail stores to sell herbs and vitamin supplements. Only Big Pharma would have been able to sell herbal medicine and vitamin supplements - it would have to be dispensed by prescription from a Western MD. HMO's wouldn't pay for the prescription and the pharmaceutical companies could charge 1000% higher price than normal. I hope that is going to circle the drain just as this recent piece of legislation has flopped.

This is very misleading. S.3002 has NOT been withdrawn! If it HAD been, you would SEE the word "withdrawn" next to the bill in the Thomas Legislative Database http://thomas.loc.gov Unfortunately, despite Hatch's letter to McCain, the bill is still in place, and we haven't seen any language changes due to Hatch's communications with him. So- we must keep the pressure on!

It is true that Senator Hatch wrote a letter to Senator McCain thanking him for discussing his concerns about S.3002, but it is NOT true that the bill has been "withdrawn". If that WERE true, the word "Withdrawn" would appear next to the bill language on the Thomas legislative database, and its not there! Lets wait and see what actual language changes stem from this before prematurely declaring "victory".

The headline of this "article" is misleading. In the body of the text, it states McCain has withdrawn support of "certain elements of the bill. I don't believe that is considered "reporting".

Glad to hear that McCain withdraws support. I don't think that it is a good idea to have them take control over herbal supplements.
